Overview:

For this unit, your class is going to imagine that it is part of a team, which is trying to figure why, where, and when earthquakes and volcanoes happen. As you have noticed, earthquakes and volcanoes often surprise people and can be devastating to communities. Wouldn’t it be helpful if these events could be predicted?

Your class will be divided into groups that will each look closely at the seismic and volcanic activity of specific regions. Each region is identified with a structure of the earth: volcano, mountain, trench, or rift. These earth structures will be home base for your Team.

The regions you will study include:
  • Aleutian Islands
  • The Andes
  • Baja California
  • The Hawaiian Islands
  • The Himalayas (Mt Everest)
  • Iceland
  • Japan
  • Java Trench
  • Mariana Trench
  • Mount Etna
  • Mount Popocatepetl
  • Mount St. Helens
  • Mount Vesuvius
  • New Zealand
  • Mount Kilimanjaro
  • St. Helena Island

You could use GOOGLE EARTH to tour these locations. Under the direction of your teacher load the following KMZ file : Earth Locations.kmz

Your task:
  • Describe the region fully and accurately
  • See if there is a predictable pattern of earthquakes and/or volcanoes.
  • Collect evidence to support your ideas about that pattern.
  • Explain why these events are occurring and what changes are resulting?

At various stages you will be asked to carry out tasks that you will refer back to and use in your final Assessment Project.
Create a folder on your H drive called: 2014 Tectonics Assignment.

Assessment: As a Team you will use WINDOWS LIVE MOVIEMAKER to prepare a movie or podcast in which you will use the ideas and images you have collected as you have worked through this unit of work to describe and explain the earth’s structure and processes at Your Earth Structure.
